5 October 2019, Bayan Baru, Penang – Some 150 men and women entrepreneurs came together to celebrate WomenBizSENSE’s 13th anniversary at Olive Tree Hotel, Bayan Baru with a fundraiser dinner and dance, decked out in their best retro outfits. They were also joined by children from Special Children’s Centre and House of Hope, two of the organisations that WomenBizSENSE works closely with.
Themed “Retro Night: Back to the 70s & 80s” the dinner and dance also featured DJ Carl Hinds.
WomenBizSENSE chairperson, Gina Koay, also presented a cheque to House of Hope to sponsor 13 children’s annual bus fares. WomenBizSENSE has been sponsoring the children’s bus fares since 2015 and continue to do so as we believe education is the key to their future.
The event also featured a silent auction of three specific art pieces called Up, Up and Away drawn by the children of Special Children’s Centre. They were taught to draw this by Gina Koay when WomenBizSENSE organised an art session at the centre a few months ago. Proceeds of the auction went back to the children and their centre.
Madam Tan Lean Kee, the wife of the Honourable Chief Minister of Penang and Madam Chong Eng, Penang State Executive Councillor for Women & Family Development, Gender Inclusiveness & Religions Other Than Islam, attended the event.
Also present were Tammy Yeoh, the organising chairperson for Retro Night and WomenBizSENSE co-founders, Datin Josephine Lo and Krista Goon.
Fellow women entrepreneur and community organisations such as Penang Women’s Development Corporation (Ong Bee Leng), Soroptimist International Penang (Michele Tan), National Association of Women Entrepreneurs Malaysia (Yeap Ai Li), Lean In Penang(Jeannie Ooi) and Penang Women Chamber of Commerce (Dato Annie Chin) also attended the celebration as VVIPs.
For the first time too, WomenBizSENSE also opened its doors to men despite being an all-women entrepreneur association.
Highlights of the evening included a fiesty shoe fashion show with exclusive designer shoe collection from Malaysian shoe brand Farfalla, a scarf showcase by Agapi Scarf and a jewellery showcase of Amee Philips’ latest collection modelled by 4 leggy and tall models. The evening made even more fun by the super hilarious and amazing trilingual emcee Isabelle Oon.
The top lucky draw prize worth RM5,000 was also sponsored by Amee Philips, a homegrown Penang jewellery brand and WomenBizSENSE member, Arene Cheok, went home with the coveted pearl necklace!
