Bayan Baru, Penang (22 July 2017) – More than 100 women comprising WomenBizSENSE members and friends dressed up in their best kebaya to celebrate the 11th anniversary of WomenBizSENSE, a Penang women entrepreneur association.
The luncheon themed “Kebaya Delights” at Olive Tree Hotel was in line with the association’s objectives to connect women entrepreneurs in Penang.
Generous WomenBizSENSE members also sponsored 8 single mothers and their children from Special Children’s Centre and House of Hope so that they too could be part of this event. Honouring underprivileged women and children is part of WomenBizSENSE’s charter – social responsibility is one of the 5 pillars of the association.
The event also featured a special sharing session by author, Nyonya food consultant and 5th generation Nyonya, Pearly Kee.
As an enterprising business woman, she shared how she started her business because she loved Nyonya food.
She wanted to share her love for Nyonya food with everyone and that started her off on her cooking classes which later became two cookery books and countless interviews in the media.
She has been featured in cooking shows on TV as well as cooked alongside some of the best chefs internationally. She was recently in Germany to consult with a catering company that had requested her feedback and thoughts on their Asian food menu (which was served on airlines flying out of Europe).
She had brought some of her cookery books and the entire batch was bought up by the women who lined up eagerly to get Pearly’s autograph.
Besides the guest sharing session, the ladies were treated to an exquisite jewellery showcase featuring Stephanos Jewellery as well as Penang jeweller Jonathan Yun’s newest Peranakan range modelled by selected WomenBizSENSE members.
The event was made even more interesting with a Ratu Kebaya competition where Pearly Kee, as well as Datin Rohana Weiler and Susan Chong (both representing Penang Women’s Development Corporation), put their heads together to pick the top 3 winners.
They took into account not only the attire but also their shoes! As Datin Rohana put it, the Ratu had to embody the whole Nyonya look.
One of our guests, Kathrane Beh, was eventually picked the winner from a shortlist of 10 finalists and crowned the 2017 WomenBizSENSE Ratu Kebaya. She took home a tiara, trophy, perfume and cash. The first runner up was Kiki Saw while Jeanne Ooi was the second runner up. Both took home perfume and cash.
Guang Ming Daily came to cover this event and the article appeared in the Sunday edition, 23 July 2017.
